Challenge

One of Equinor’s Statfjord wells was suffering from reduced production due to BaSO4 scale plugging of the ICD expandable sand screens and the client had no effective solution to stimulate the well. The greatest challenge is that there are minimal punched holes in the base pipe, limiting the area through which the treatment can reach the screens.

Solution

Improve connectivity to the reservoir by clearing out blockages using electro-hydraulic pulsing technology

• The BLUESPARK® 275 tool was run on third-party Wireline tractor to the treatment interval
• Access to the three screens was through a total of only forty-four 12 mm punched holes in the base pipe
• 27 m (89 ft) of ICD sand screen was treated through the base pipe with 100% operating efficiency
• Only 78% of the screens could be pulsed due to obstructions

Outcome

• Accurately positioned BLUESPARK® tool over the 12 mm holes, allowing pulse power to reach and clean the screens through limited openings
• The production returned to 90% of the original stabilized production
• Total stabilized production increased from 1,320 b/d to 2,085 b/d, a 58% increase
• The following total sustained production increases were observed: 53% after 7 months and 34% after 12 months
