CHALLENGE

CHALLENGE

The oil producing wells in the client’s offshore field experience severe calcium carbonate (CaCO3) scaling during the production phase.  This scale can make wellbore access difficult.  The client’s usual method of treatment was spotting acid using coiled tubing.  The client was looking for a solution that would reduce cost, footprint and time, while also providing a better success rate for the intervention.  The client was having success with using BLUESPARK® to treat scale in other wellbores so decided it would be a good method for removing scale over the tubing hanger of a well they were trying to access.

SOLUTION

Remove CaCO3 scale from the inside of tubing using electro-hydraulic pulsing technology.

  • A camera was run over the interval to be treated to determine the extent of scale present in the tubing

  • The BLUESPARK® tool was run over the 7-inch tubing hanger

  • The camera was run again to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment

CONDITIONS

  • Offshore conventional oil field

  • Vertical section of wellbore

  • Temperature: 30 °C (86 °F)

OUTCOME

  • Comparison of camera images from before and after treatment show removal of a majority of the scale present, as seen in the images below

  • Access to the wellbore was now greatly improved
